Angela Merkel offers herself as a conciliator

Sunday, September 10th, 2017 | World News

With his experience in international negotiations, Germany wants to actively help with the diplomatic settlement of the crisis around North Korea's nuclear armament. Chancellor Angela Merkel is a mediator for this.

Before the delicate deliberations in the UN Security Council on new sanctions against North Korea, Merkel declared: "If our participation in talks is desired, I will immediately say yes." In her talk with the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung", she referred to the good experiences with nuclear negotiations with Iran.

Eight days after the most recent nuclear test in North Korea, the UN Security Council wants to discuss its further action this Monday. The US wants to enforce intensified sanctions against Pyongyang and have also brought an oilbargo into play. North Korea is threatened with counter-measures in this case. In the past few days, Merkel had already consulted with the Chinese President Xi Jinping and other stakeholders and expressed his opinion on a diplomatic solution and other sanctions.

North Korea celebrates Atombombentest as "great victory"
On the day of its founding of the state on Saturday, North Korea declared itself an "impermissive atmacht". According to state media, the ruler Kim Jong Un celebrated "the latest test of a hydrogen bomb as a great victory, which the Koreans had won with their blood" at a banquet in honor of its nuclear technicians.

Merkel (CDU) referred to the negotiations on the Iranian Atrocrogram in which she had participated in the negotiations with the United Nations Security Council, as well as the five veto-voters of the UN Security Council. This "long but important time of diplomacy" came to a "good end" last year. "I would also like to see such a format for the settlement of the North Korean conflict, and Europe and especially Germany should be ready to contribute a very active part," the Chancellor said.

In addition to Xi, Merkel has already spoken with the presidents of France, the US and South Korea and the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. A conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is against sanctions, should follow Monday. Merkel had campaigned to strengthen the pressure on Pyongyang by means of sanctions to increase North Korea's willingness to negotiate.

USA are pushing for tougher sanctions
The Security Council's planned meeting could be postponed or ended without a vote. US ambassador Nikki Haley, after the North Korean nuclear test, had made a strong case for stronger sanctions such as an oil embargo and a freezing of all foreign assets of Kim Jong Un and presented a corresponding resolution. The two vetoms of China and Russia have not yet approved the draft.

Unlike Korea, North Korea waited for an atomic test on its national holiday. However, the official newspaper "Rodong Sinmun" called for the expansion of the rocket and atomic program to protect North Korea against the USA. As long as Washington maintained its "hostile policy," the US would "continue to receive large and small gift packages from us." North Korea had described the tests of intercontinental rockets in July and the nuclear test last Sunday as gifts.

The tests violate UN resolutions. North Korea is said to be able to mount hydrogen bombs on long-range missiles that the US can reach. Hydrogen or H-bombs are many times stronger than conventional atomic bombs. Whether the experiment actually was an H-bomb, could not be independently confirmed so far.
