One month before the Bundestag election, Angela Merkel still considers the outcome of the vote to be absolutely open. In an interview, the top candidate of the Union said, "you can read surveys these days that 46 percent of people have not yet decided." The latest state elections had also just ended.

In polls, the CDU and the Bavarian sister company CSU have a clear lead over the SPD. The Union stands at 38 percent and 39 percent, respectively, in the ARD "Deutschlandtrend" and ZDF "Politbarometer" published on Friday. The Social Democrats with Chancellor candidate Martin Schulz come only to 22 per cent and have, according to current situation, no computationally possible coalition option to oust Merkel.

The Chancellor defends her refugee policy
In the interview with the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung", Merkel rejected the reproach alleged against her refugee policy, neglected the conservative wing of the Union and given the AfD too much room. In 2015, Germany had helped hundreds of thousands of people in a great humanitarian emergency. "I am convinced that this was right and that our country has shown itself to be a very good side," she said.

Merkel welcomes the return of Guttenberg
The Chancellor welcomed the return of the former Minister of Defense Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg (CSU), who had resigned six years ago because of a dubious dissertation, to the political stage in Germany. "I am delighted that Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg is taking part in the Bundestag election campaign," said Merkel of the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung". She is in good contact with Guttenberg. However, she does not know "what he imagines for his future".

Cooperation with the AfD
In an interview with "Welt am Sonntag", Merkel spoke out against every form of cooperation with the AfD. "It is quite clear that the AfD can not be a partner for us in any form of cooperation, but we must try to win back every single person."
