Android spread: 100 percent of all Android devices are outdated

Wednesday, September 13th, 2017 | Gadgets

Google has released latest figures on Android spreading. The current Android main version is not listed, because there are not enough devices with it. Google itself states that only Android versions are listed which run at least 0.1 percent of the devices used. Android 8.0 alias Oreo does not even reach this 0.1 percent. The new Android main version was released just under a month ago.

Also the penultimate version continues a niche and more than 98 percent of the devices run with an outdated Android version. Because the share of Android 7.1 alias Nougat has just increased from weak 1.2 percent to 1.6 percent within a month. Something better looks with Android 7.0, here the share has increased to 14.2 percent. Just a month ago the nougat share was 12.3 percent.
Marshmallow remains strong
Both nougat versions together now account for 15.8 percent, compared with 13.5 percent in the previous month. The clearly dominant Android version is still Marshmallow, but it has been minimized in the spread. The share of devices with Android 6.0 decreased from 32.3 percent to 32.2 percent.

Lollipop also loses slightly and remains below the 30 percent mark. Both Lollipop versions have a total share of 28.8 percent, compared to 29.2 percent in the previous month. 21.7 percent on Android 5.1 and 7.1 percent on Android 5.0.

Very old Android versions sag
The share of devices with Android 4.4 alias Kitkat has further decreased from 16 percent to 15.1 percent. This also applies to the Jelly Bean platform, which is becoming increasingly important. All three versions of the Jelly Bean still have a share of 6.9 percent – one month ago the share was still 7.6 percent.
Android 4.0.x also known as Ice Cream Sandwich as well as Android 2.3 alias Gingerbread are 0.6 percent equal and lost both 0.1 percentage points.
Google's current survey takes into account those devices that actively accessed the Play Store between September 4 and 11, Google wants developers to show which platforms they should develop. It also shows the degree of fragmentation of the Android platform. The API level indicates the level at which an application is no longer compatible with older devices.
