Analog disconnection: Unitymedia customers must repeat the transmitter search

Thursday, August 31st, 2017 | Gadgets

After the breakdowns of the transmitter reorganization of Unitymedia in North Rhine-Westphalia, all users now have to repeat the search. This was announced by the company on 31 August 2017. Affected households were displayed in SD quality as encrypted or these were not at all to receive.

Approximately two percent of the Group's 3.5 million TV customers were affected in North Rhine-Westphalia, ie 70,000 households. The interference affects the private RTL, Sat1, ProSieben, Vox, RTL2, KabelEnter, Super RTL, N-TV, Prosieben Maxx and Sixx.
Customers affected by the Unitymedia network received the TV signal via older, poorly shielded house distribution systems or antenna cables and terminals. This is caused by electromagnetic radiation which disturbs the transmission of the TV signal in the lower frequency range at the terminals of some customers due to faulty shielding of cables or plugs.
Changing frequency coverage is not so easy
Unitymedia wanted to change the channel lists after the analog switch-off. The goal was to change the frequency coverage in such a way that space for new HD stations and faster internet is usable. With the transmitter numbers, the provider changed the assignment in the frequency spectrum of his cable. Thus, digital TV programs are to migrate to lower frequency ranges, where analogue television programs were previously. The Docsis channels for data transmission are moved to a higher frequency range.

To solve the problem, the technology at Unitymedia had to move the affected channels to a different channel than originally planned. "For this reason, Unitymedia strongly advises all cable customers in North Rhine-Westphalia to conduct another search on Friday, September 1, in order to receive all channels as usual," explained the cable network operator.
"I apologize for the overall situation at the transmitter re-organization," said Chief Operations Officer Gudrun Scharler. Unitymedia checks whether the planned re-screening of broadcasters in Hesse and Baden-W├╝rttemberg is postponed.
