Manuela Schwesig teaches her son Julian (10) privately. For the decision, the Regierungschefin of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern criticized. Obviously, however, were purely practical reasons.

According to the Minister-President, the choice of a private school for her son is not an expression of a lack of trust in the state school system. It was a "personal decision". The ruling in the selection had given the proximity of the school to the dwelling house of the family, said Schwesigs government spokesman Andreas Timm. The Landeschein of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern appreciate the work at all Schweriner schools – no matter whether these are in state or free sponsorship.

Schwesig warned that the different offers should not be played against each other. It is about diversity in the educational offer. Government spokesman Timm said that the only secondary school in the residential area of the family was the free school. The private school costs about 200 euros per month.

Each ninth child is taught privately
After the end of the four-year elementary school in a state school, Schwesig's son had a change of school. The school law in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern provides for a change to the orientation level at a regional school. The change to a grammar school may follow two years later.

Whoever is able to send his or her child to a state special gymnasium – for example for music or sports – or to a private school, avoids the second change of school. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, around eleven per cent of the children attend a free-school school.

 Criticism of Linkspartei and teachers
The oppositional Left Party of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern had criticized Schwesig's step. The school election is an expression of the distrust of the minister-president in the state school system, said the chairman of the parliamentary group Simone Oldenburg in the North German Broadcasting (NDR). After the "kaputtsparen of the past years" the deficits in the regional regional school were evidently so large that Schwesig did not want her to her child.

The German teachers' association also criticized the SPD politician. "Government Minister Schwesig seems to have little confidence in the public schools in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern," said Heinz-Peter Meidinger, the association's association, of the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung". This is a "fatal sign". But it also applies here that the 43-year-old mother, like others, is free to decide in private life.
