Sunday, August 6th, 2017 | World News

It was the feared cooling down after the most recent heat wave: In Austria are after fire, hail and mudslaw the fire brigades in continuous use. A man died through a lightning stroke.

The storms have caused great damage. Particularly affected were in the night places in the province of Salzburg, which are popular with tourists. Violent rain cut off the Grossarl valley from the environment.

The road from the valley in St. Johann im Pongau was blocked by the police. Cleanup work was carried out after mudsweets on Sunday. The Mure even carried vehicles with him. "I've already experienced a lot, but I've never seen anything like it," said fire commander Josef Promegger.

A total of 680 firefighters traveled to around 100 operations in the Lungau, Pongau and Pinzgau areas. For Sunday afternoon rain was expected again. Even Obertauern was no longer on the road after the murenabungen.

From the Grossarl Valley, several people had to be taken from the valley by helicopter or by truck. The guests of a hotel were brought to the upper floors of the building because of flooding. Many tourists, including Germans, escaped to two emergency camps. When they can leave the valley, it was initially unclear.

The Großarler Ache has crossed the shore several times. A video on the Facebook page of the volunteer fire brigade showed how a rushing river accompanied by thunder runs through the place. The streets were partly covered up to two meters high with gravel and mud. Two people were trapped in the car by the Mure. They remained uninjured.

A lot of rubble also blocked the road to Obertauern. In the night of Sunday, about 50 people had been hunted with their vehicles.

In Upper Austria, a 77-year-old was struck by a lightning strike. The man was together with a friend in Waldzell near Ried im Innkreis when the fatal incident occurred. He was able to be resurrected, but died Sunday afternoon of his injuries in a hospital.

Heavy rain and hail also passed through Styria at night. No sooner had the clearing work started from the last thunderstorm on Friday evening, new storms arose at the weekend. Streams broke over the shores, slopes slid down and trees crashed into the streets. Numerous cellars were flooded and houses evacuated. Particularly affected were the districts of Murau, Murtal and Liezen.

The Sölkpass road was completely torn away in Liezen over a length of at least 100 meters. On Sunday afternoon a hiker was missing. The rest of his group had already been found and brought to safety with helicopters. The hail insurance estimated the damage to Styrian agriculture by the recent storms to one million euros.

In Tyrol, too, the deployment forces were due to muddles, landslides and flooded basements. The greatest impact was felt in the Ziller, Wipp and Stubaital as well as in East Tyrol.
